Preparing for Graduation
It is the responsibility of each graduate student to file for graduation by the Graduation Deadlines (provided as a pdf), typically before or at the beginning of the semester in which he/she hopes to graduate. Filing for graduation entails the following:
- Consult your department/program to determine whether you are on schedule to graduate, i.e., that you will be able to document having completed all degree requirements by your graduation date. You should do this at the beginning of the semester in which your anticipated graduation date falls.
- Prepare a Program of Study form. (Consult your department as to whether you may file the generic form provided here as a pdf or a department-specific version of the form.)
- Submit the Program of Study form to your department/program for review by your advisor. If it is approved by your department/program, they will submit it to the Graduate Enrollment Management Center for review. After receiving it, the Graduate Enrollment Management Center reviews your records to ensure that all departmental and University-wide requirements have been met. Any exceptions to the published requirements must be acknowledged in writing by your department and documented appropriately, including a rationale. The Program of Study form must be submitted to the Graduate Enrollment Management Center according to the published deadline in order to allow adequate time for conferral of your degree after you have met all degree requirements.
- File Diploma Request To file a diploma request or to change your expected graduation term, please follow the "File Diploma Request" link under the Student Services section of MySlice
Obtaining a Diploma or a Degree-Bearing Transcript
There are four official degree conferral dates each year. Typically they are in May, June (or July), August, and December. The Registrar publishes these dates each year. Your degree will be posted on or after the official dates. The process of degree clearance and conferral may take up to six weeks after the conferral date. You may order a degree-bearing transcript from the Office of the Registrar once you have been cleared for your degree and it has been posted by the Registrar.
Your diploma is issued by the Office of the Registrar. The information on your Diploma Request Card includes the address to which your diploma will be mailed. Please make sure it is an address that will still be active up to six months after your official degree conferral date. It is possible to arrange for the framing or special mounting of your diploma through the Syracuse University Bookstore. For students planning to graduate in May, you will receive information about commencement and diploma arrangements in the mail if you have filed your Diploma Request Card by the published deadlines.
Special Notes for Doctoral Students
Doctoral candidates who complete all degree requirements by the published deadlines, including filing all required documents may attend the Doctoral Dinner sponsored by the Graduate School during Commencement weekend. Check the Graduate School website for details during the Spring semester.
