Grievance Resolution
Graduate Students may follow the procedure contained in Rule 51.0, Grievance Procedure, in Academic Rules & Regulations of the Graduate School for resolution of grievances http://coursecatalog.syr.edu/rules.aspx .
The University Committees listed below also have jurisdiction for hearing grievances.
Senate Academic Freedom, Tenure, Professional Ethics Committee
Has jurisdiction over matters of academic freedom, professional ethics, and faculty sexual harassment cases. Under the SU Sexual Harassment Policy, graduate students with TA, RA, or GA titles come under this jurisdiction. The Committee has extended its jurisdiction to include matters that might affect graduate students in matters of academic pursuit and general quality of life issues while they are affiliated as a graduate student at SU.
Senate Affirmative Action Committee
Has jurisdiction over matters of Civil Rights, Federal/State Affirmative Action Mandates, Federal Disability Law, Legal discrimination in reference to race, ethnicity, age, gender, ability, sexual orientation, religion, size, etc.
University Judicial System
This system is composed of the University Judicial Board, Greek Justice Board, University Appeals Board and Academic Judicial Boards. Their jurisdiction concerns cases of alleged violations of the Code of Student Conduct.
Senate Committee on Instruction
Has jurisdiction regarding cases of grade appeal. Such issues include teaching load, class size, use of graduate assistants, testing, and other pedagogical problems. The committee will also adjudicate course grade appeals based upon procedural irregularities in accordance with the University's official policy on course grade appeals.
